Volunteer Work and Service Learning
A great way to test your interest in a certain field is through performing volunteer work or service learning. Giving of your time to help an organization, business, or social cause can allow you the opportunity to perform similar tasks or work in a similar environment to your field of interest. Additionally, the skills you learn and develop during these experiences are transferable to paid employment and indicate a commitment to your community.
While service learning courses provide academic credit for volunteer work, volunteering without a course connection still allows students to develop skills that are transferable to paid employment. It doesn't matter where you learned the skill; what matters is that you can do it!
Visit the The Center for Service and Learning to view a list of service learning courses and opportunities for community service involvement as well as student service organizations and leadership opportunities.
